Can I Swim or Shower with Gold Jewelry?

Everyone has their most loved gold jewelry and once you are lucky enough to find it, you might want to take it everywhere with you. With its timelessness and fascinating shine, gold jewelry compliments and even lifts up any outfit, making them pieces that you put on once and never take off. Gold jewelry is known for its durability and resistance to the wear and tear of everyday life. But just how durable is gold jewelry? Is there a limit to where and how much you should wear your pieces? Is it okay to shower with a gold necklace? Let's find out together!

What to Know When Jewelry Touches Water

Although gold jewelry has been known to be worn in the shower and the metal is not damaged by water, wearing it on a daily basis has its drawbacks. As we've mentioned before, real gold is water- and tarnish-resistant. Thanks to its chemical structure, contact with liquids will not result in a change or loss of color. Showering with a gold chain or showering with a gold necklace, therefore, is perfectly fine. That being said, although actual contact with liquids and lotions will not affect the gold itself, it is always better to minimize contact as products such as perfumes, lotions and oils are bound to leave some residue. Although these can easily be cleaned with warm water and soap, they may give a dull appearance to your gold pieces.

Pure gold is an incredibly soft metal. Most high quality jewelry makers will use alloys to strengthen their pieces and create durable pieces that will be able to be worn on a day to day basis, such as silver and copper. While gold is water resistant, the metals used in alloys can change color over time. Although it can be re-polished, it is better to take precautions than go through the trouble and expense of restoring the shine. Also, repolishing any gold chains will cause the jewelry to lose some of its original weight.

What really affects the appearance of gold jewelry is scratches. Let's be honest, scratching your jewelry is an unavoidable fact. However, it is always good to try and reduce any physical contact your jewelry may have. When putting on perfume, try to spray it on your clothing rather than your jewelry. Bath products such as scrubs and exfoliators can also wear down the gold finish if you shower with a gold chain. If you are looking for jewelry that you can wear in the shower, 10K and 14K gold waterproof pieces are the way to go. There's no physical or chemical danger when you shower with 14K gold or 10K gold.

If you're in doubt about the chemical structure and components of your gold jewelry, it is always a safer bet to take your jewelry off before you shower, and even out of the bathroom. If your jewelry is gold plated rather than solid gold, for example, scrubs and chemicals can cause gold plating to eventually wear off - especially if the piece isn't of high quality. Yes, it may seem like a hassle to remove your jewelry every time you shower, but make this a habit if you want to protect the shine and quality of your jewelry for years to come. Taking them off can save you paying for post-shower maintenance and repairs and also eliminates the risk of them going down the drain! When you shower, find a special place near the shower so that you can take them right off before you hop in to shower. Having a designated place makes it much easier to care for your jewelry and make it a habit. All in all, it is perfectly fine to shower with gold jewelry. If you are unsure of the quality or make of your gold pieces, we recommend taking your gold jewelry off before you hop into a nice bath.

And how about showering with Monaco Chain pieces? Monaco Chain pieces are made out of 100% real 10K and 14K yellow gold. Their structure make them durable enough to wear everyday. As they are real gold, made with European standard quality, they are completely waterproof. So, yes, you can shower with Monaco Chain pieces. It is even okay to swim in the pool or the ocean while wearing your Monaco Chain jewelry. To minimize any built-up residue or foggy appearance, clean your gold jewelry with warm water and soap and gently wipe with a soft piece of cloth.

Here are a few other tips to keep your gold jewelry safe and clean.

Remember to take off your gold jewelry:

  1. Before applying sunscreen and insect repellent. Lotion can get into small gaps in your gold chains. Additionally, lotions and sprays can create a film on your jewelry, making it appear dull.
  2. In cold water. The cool temperature constricts the fingers and creates a place where the ring can slip. Once in the water, you might not even notice until it's too late.
  3. Before entering the hot tub. Similar to a pool, chlorine can tarnish and discolor metals in gold alloys, and it can slowly attack the polish of gemstones.
  4. Before playing in the sand or gardening or applying exfoliating scrubs. Dirt and small stones are abrasive. Your jewelry can be permanently damaged if scratched by these small particles.

Whether it is a gold necklace, bracelet, ring, or earrings, if they are 10K, 14K, 18K, or 22K, gold will not get affected by water. However, it is still not recommended to wear any gold jewelry while swimming as they can get lost easily.
